Dorsets Vision for Merlin:

Dorset LA encourages schools to use Merlin as a cost-effective way to provide exciting teaching and learning resources in class and for home learning. We believe schools will find Merlin a useful tool to communicate with parents and engage them in their children’s learning.
Local Authority Merlin Roadmap:

We believe almost all schools in Dorset that wished to adopt Merlin have now done so but support is still available for those who still wish to take that decision. Update training sessions continue to be run at DSEC Bovington as new features appear in Merlin, or schools’ demand for continued support makes a course cost-effective. In-house training is offered free to any school, either as one-to-one training for Merlin administrators and lead teachers, INSET or awareness sessions for school leaders and governors.

Best Practice

One of Dorset's secondary schools used Merlin to support transition activities for Year 6 pupils from feeder schools who were joining the secondary school the next term. Pupils were able to ask questions of the staff at the secondary school using the discussion boards, and submit samples of work for moderation.

One of Dorset's First schools uses Merlin across all areas of school life, from e-portfolios for the children, to classroom and home learning activities, to a virtual staffroom and the school newspaper. All children can contribute to the paper, and the stories are edited by a group of gifted and talented pupils, providing a very successful whole-school writing project.

Another First school has used Merlin to help children who have now left their school. The children are using the discussion boards to support each other with the transition to their new Middle school and give advice to the children still in the First school. Tips on how to deal with the annual camping trip was one great example of peer support!

Several schools are providing homework for children on Merlin, with hand-in folders for completed work.

Experienced Merlin users in some schools are starting to share their knowledge with neighbouring schools, which is great news.
